Zoology Stem Cells and Their Effect on Tumor Growth and Cancer Creation Stem cells are a growing phenomenon in the cancer research world. Researchers are getting closer and closer to a cure, they are exploring other options to treat cancer. Stem cells are relatively new to the medical world, making their first appearance in 1956 (†Timeline for Stem Cell Research†, 1), and as with everything, there are flaws. Despite these flaws, stem cell treatment is something more people are turning to, as it is widely becoming one of the most popular ways to treat cancer (besides radiation and chemotherapy, respectively). Stem cell treatments are not accepted by all, as the rising questions are becoming, ‘Do stem cells worsen cancer?’, or better yet ‘Can stem cell treatments give rise to new types of cancer?’ My purpose in this paper is to discuss not only the bad, but also the good in stem cells. In 2005, in a relatively unknown country, a family had a child diagnos ed with ataxia-telangiectasia, a disease that slows down bodily functions such as your immune system, speech, and vision (Genetics Hm. Reference). Without any other feasible options, they took their child to Moscow, Russia to begin stem cell treatments. They went back three times over the next three years, and in the third year, the boy was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Valduron Cleare English 119 18th October, 2011 Cultural Component The components of culture are: the attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions, art, clothing, food, language and achievements of society that are passed on to each generation. With that explanation I’ve realized that culture is in almost every aspect of our lives. I experienced at least four of these components during my recent trips to Arawak key. We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural Component or any similar topic only for you Order Now Firstly, as a tradition for most Bahamian birthday celebrations, the main goal is to eat more than you regularly do, and we did just that. Our party consisted of my Father and mother, my two older brothers and me. After all of the congratulations on seeing another year on this earth were done, we set out to our destination. Usually we just order pizza and call it a day but we wanted to make this day special. Our place of choice was the great Arawak Key, or as I like to call it, food central. As we arrived there was rake n’ scrape music playing and people dancing. It was also obvious that we weren’t the only ones with that idea. Hungry faces as far as the eye can see, but no one was as hungry as me. I searched all around for an empty restaurant to seat me family of five. It felt like it was hopeless because every restaurant we looked in, a full house of hungry faces looked back at us. We finally found a diamond in the rough with a slightly empty restaurant. This restaurant had a cozy feel to it. It had basic light brown paint and Bahamian art strung up on the walls. These paintings were probably purchase from schools which made me wish I did better in art. As we ordered our food another component of culture came to me. The menu was stacked with Bahamian dishes, from the almighty conch snack to the luxurious lobster and shrimp snacks. I ordered two different meals for myself only and when I was finished, I still wasn’t full. Secondly, I went to an event known as Fam Fest. This is a free gospel concert held annually on Arawak key. This brings up another cultural component which is beliefs. The majority of the Bahamas is of the Christian denomination. This was seen excellently with the numbers of people that showed up. Although it could have been due only to the fact that it was free, because something that is free and a Bahamian is never far apart. Getting back to topic, with a gathering of Bahamians there has to be food. The entire right sight of the venue was covered by vendors set upped to sell their dishes. Hundreds of people gathered to praise the lord and satisfy their stomachs, not a bad combination. Arawak key is a Bahamian culture haven. From the food, the music, and the dancing, it all is truly a culture filled place. Also the clothes worn by employees to accentuate their restaurant’s Bahamian qualities are brilliant. Firstly, the food is pure Bahamian influenced. The sound of conch salad being prepared fills the air and the smell of fried foods just flow through your nostrils. Furthermore, the rake n’ scrape music played by live bands or speakers just set the mood and make for the perfect Bahamian experience. Also, the dancing, although mostly done by drunken men and women, still gives a nice feel to the place. In conclusion, it is clear to say that the components of culture, or just culture itself is evident almost everywhere you go. Arawak Key is a perfect place to go if you want a true culture experience. This well respected farming family had no enemies, and no quarrels. Although they were wealthy, Mr. Clutter never kept cash in the house. The whole region and eventually the country was shocked by the randomness and brutality of the act, in much the same way it was by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The two men in which didnt even know the Clutter family went into their house and shot all four of them. There were two main characters. Dick is the first one that I will talk about. Dick was 33 years old and he did not have the best character. Dick was one who helped participate in the killing of the Clutter family. I didnt like him from the very beginning. He struck me as the type that is your friend one minute and enemy the next. Perry is the other charecter that I will talk about. Perry wasnt as bad as Dick but yet he still struck me as having a bad character for what he did to the family. It took me awhile to get a good impression of Perry. Perry was a really nice guy and I think that he just got mixed in with the wrong crowd. At the beginning, when they first started to kill all of the family members, they had them tied up and Perry didnt want to kill the family but he thought that if he acted like he was gonna kill Mr. Clutter then Dick would stop him. Then they would let them all go but when Dick didnt stop him Perry became a mad man and went ahead and killed the whole family. Later at the gallows Perry started to have second thoughts a little to late so he tried to starve himself but didnt succeed. He was finally hung, during the hanging period he apologized to everyone for what he did. This is it, this is it, this had to be it, theres the school, theres the garage, now we turn south. To Perry, it seemed as though Dick was muttering jubilant mumbo-jumbo. They left the highway, sped through a deserted Holcomb, and crossed the Santa Fe tracks. The bank, that must be the bank, no we turn west-see the trees? This is it, this has to be it. The headlights disclosed a lane of Chinese elms; bundles of wind-blown thistle scurried across it. Dick doused the headlights, slowed down, and stopped until his eyes were adjusted to the moon-illuminated night. Presently, the car crept forward. This passage was chosen because it was what Dick and Perry were saying right before they went to the Clutter house and killed the family. I feel that this quote is an important one. To me I feel that it suggests that the accused were out to commit a robbery, and had no original intent to kill the Clutters. Due to Mr. Clutter not keeping any money in the home, the criminals were unable to locate any money to steal. The criminals then proceeded to kill the family of four. I feel that the murderers used the Clutters as a way of removing their anger from not being able to locate the money they were looking for. The book follows the story to the trial and execution of the killers, and spares few details throughout. The outcome of the trial was guilty and the punishment was death by hanging the accused. How Does Media Today Play a Role in Stereotyping R EssayOne of the main points I saw by reading this book was the way the country / region viewed itself after the murder occured. Many were shocked by the murder. I feel that if the murder had of occured in todays society people would not have been as shocked as they were then.
